Wongamine, WA: Hannah Louise Fraser killed in crash with six kids in car

A mother who was killed in a head-on crash while driving her young children to their weekly homeschooling group in Perth has been described as an “angel” and “the best mother”.

Hannah Louise Fraser, 30, and her children were travelling on Goomalling-Toodyay Rd in Wongamine, in Western Australia’s Wheatbelt region, when their Kia Carnival van crashed with a cement truck just after 6am on Wednesday.

She died at the scene, while her six children – aged between one and 13 years – were rushed to Perth Children’s Hospital, including four of them who were transported by helicopter.

While some of the children had been deemed to be in a critical condition on Wednesday night, their heartbroken father Leighton Fraser revealed on social media that they were all now stable.

“At this time I have no words to describe how devastated I am,” he wrote.

“All children are stable at this point in time. We will be in hospital for quite some time as there are a lot of injuries, but they are pulling though.

“All I ask of everyone is that you keep us in your thoughts and prayers over the next months.”

Mr Fraser separately posted an emotional tribute to the “love of my life” on social media.

“I’m sure I got the chance to tell you just how much your presence in my life made me a better man or just how much you meant to me and I hope that in the years we spent side-by-side my actions told you every day that I love you more than words can describe,” he wrote.

“The thought of you not being here with me is so surreal.

“You’re right here with me and you always will be.”

Mr Fraser vowed to raise their six children to the best of his ability in honour of his wife.

“As I look to our future, I vow to raise the kids to the absolute best of my ability and promise that I will always honour the amazing person you are,” he said.

“Til I see you again, rest easy my darling. I will love and cherish you always. Gone but never forgotten.”

Her siblings Amanda Beck and Jeremy King also shared emotional tributes to Ms Fraser, saying she’s “in a better place...but she wasn’t supposed to go this soon.”

“I can’t believe [the kids] are all here with us, I’m so grateful, we’ve lost enough,” Ms Beck told reporters.

“There’s a fair share of bumps and bruises and broken bones, but it’s their broken hearts I worry about the most.”

They also shared that Ms Fraser was taking her children to their homeschooling group at the time of the crash.

“She did it for the kids, they loved it and there’s no way she was going to miss it,” Mr King said.

Friends and family replied to his post, sharing their own memories of Ms Fraser.

“My heart goes out to you and the children. Hannah was a very happy, loving lady, that has touch(ed) so many people’s heart(s),” one person wrote.

Another person commented: “Hannah was such a beautiful person with a heart of gold and the best mother.”

A close friend wrote: “Hannah was one (of the) kindest souls I’ve ever met in my entire life. Many, many lives have been rocked with this devastation, she had such a positive impact on so many people’s lives.”

Another person commented: “Hannah had a way about her that spoke ‘friend’ to everyone she met. Her love, her humble heart touched many. Praying for you and your beautiful children. Hannah’s life is a testimony to many.”

Another tribute read: “The love you both had for each other was something inspiring. Hannah was the most selfless person I had ever met with the kindest of smiles.”

One friend posted photographs with their own tribute on Facebook, describing Ms Fraser as an “angel”.

“The world lost an angel. To this day I have never met someone who was as humble and such a beautiful soul as you,” they wrote.

“Your smile lit up the room wherever you went. I could list so many memories here – Sizzler dates, art room antics, bets for graduation, Kings Park trips and photo shoots.

“You was wise beyond your years and I am so grateful for knowing you.

“My love and thoughts go out to Leighton, your beautiful babies and family. You will be so missed, Hannah. The world was a better place with you in it.”

The 58-year-old male truck driver was not seriously injured in the crash but was taken to Northam Hospital as a precaution.

WA Police said the crash was a “tragic reminder” of how lives could be changed in an instant from road accidents.

“In addition to the tragic loss of life in this crash, there are six children and the driver of the truck who have all personally experienced a traumatic event and will need ongoing support,” police said in a statement.

“While the circumstances surrounding this crash are still under investigation, it is clear something has gone wrong, and in that split second it has ended in tragedy.

“We urge all motorists to take care on the roads.”

A GoFundMe page started by Mr Fraser’s father has so far raised more than $41,000 for the grieving family.

“Absolutely heartbreaking. If there is anything practical we can do please ask. Praying for your family,” one person wrote alongside their donation.

Another person wrote: “Taken too soon. Hannah was such a wonderful mother and friend, and I will forever cherish our memories we had together … my mentor, she always had an open ear and wore her heart on her sleeve. Truly a remarkable, remarkable woman of God. Gone but will never be forgotten.”
