NBA style power rankings: Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scoring points on, off the court

Oklahoma City Thunder guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is in the midst of his best season on the court — and off the court if his pregame outfits are factored in. Much like his game, Gilgeous-Alexander’s sense of style was apparent from the moment he was drafted in 2018.

What intrigued teams most about Gilgeous-Alexander was his potential. He’s living up to the expectations and is on his way to exceeding them — whether that means game winners while trying to lead his team to a postseason berth or the clothes he rocks before said games.

Let’s take a look at some of my favorite fits this season from Gilgeous-Alexander thus far:

10. Nov. 17

A leather magenta button-down shirt may be one of the rarer finds. And if you’re new to Gilgeous-Alexander fits, you can usually expect one of three things (if not all three): boots, baggy pants and avoiding looking directly at the camera. All of which he often makes look cooler than most people.

The brown color of these pants does a nice job of complementing the magenta, but Gilgeous-Alexander chose to wear white-and-brown sneakers rather than boots. This fit exudes the confidence of a player coming into his prime, averaging career highs in points, steals, blocks, free-throw percentage, field goal percentage and minutes.

9. March 16

The first thing that came to mind when I saw this photo was Travis Scott’s “3500” song — for a couple of reasons. First, Gilgeous-Alexander has a mystique similar to Scott’s, from his hair to his poses that don’t face the photographer. Second, I’d imagine this jacket is in the four-figure ballpark.

His white sweater and white boots accentuate the white in his coat. I also appreciate the fact he kept the pants brown, just in a lighter shade of the coat.

8. Dec. 5

I’ve made reference to the movie “Blade” before, but no fit I’ve seen all season reminds me of that more than this. In the most stylish way possible.

The simplest way to sum up this all-black fit is “sleek.” The leather trench coat has a bit of a sheen, as do his pants and woven boots. Gilgeous-Alexander’s Chanel chains are the only items worn that aren’t black, and they provide a subtle yet necessary contrast.

7. Jan. 12

This brown leather biker jacket with a red stripe has a vintage look to it. Gilgeous-Alexander seemed to notice, as well, as he also rocked a long Jesus piece, reminiscent of the early 2000s, and jeans with a washed appearance. His black shirt and boots work as an undertone to the brown in his jacket.

Throwing up the peace sign could be a go-to for him, but for the sake of the nostalgic fit, I’ll assume he did it knowing it’s a classic pose.

6. Jan. 26

This intentionally shaggy cardigan stood out instantly. The Chanel logo caught my eye, plus the blue in all shades drew me in. The light denim doesn’t diminish any of the blue in the cardigan; it almost makes the blue more noticeable.

To add, Gilgeous-Alexander’s blue suede tote bag fits right in theme with the fit as a whole.

5. Nov. 14

Considering Gilgeous-Alexander is Canadian, it’s only right that I include his Canadian tuxedo. For starters, I like the dark denim and all of the intricate stitching. His bucket hat has various neutral colors with a streak of baby blue, but none of it seems to conflict with the denim.

And per usual, it wouldn’t be a proper Gilgeous-Alexander fit without the boots — and this time, they’re orange. They give the rest of the outfit a splash of color that can’t be achieved solely by the Canadian tuxedo.

4. Oct. 28

It’s not every day you see a Supreme Yohji Yamamoto Vanson jacket, but it seems fitting Gilgeous-Alexander has this in his arsenal. My favorite part of this jacket is that each side looks like it could be its own. The Vanson and Supreme logos are even incomplete because of this, but it gives the jacket a bit of an abstract look.

Also, notice the rings and keychain hanging from the belt.

3. Feb. 18

All-Star Weekend was the perfect place for Gilgeous-Alexander to showcase his style. This custom Thunder leather letterman is one of a few impressive fits the All-Star guard put together for that weekend.

This jacket is so colorful and vibrant that Gilgeous-Alexander opted only for a white T-shirt and cream pants. His shirt and boots being the same white allows the color in the pants to stand out a bit more.

A Louis Vuitton letterman is impressive enough, but the baby blue in this jacket adds to it (baby blue is one of my favorite colors). Late Louis Vuitton creative director Virgil Abloh’s influences can be seen throughout this jacket, from the angels to the boldness of each patch.

Gilgeous-Alexander was sure to include a close-up photo of his high-top Air Force 1s engraved with countless Louis Vuitton logos (click the slideshow). His B.B. Simon belt is another highlight of this fit.

For what it’s worth, this still counts as a pregame fit. Sometimes you just can’t wait to get to the arena to take the photo you need.

1. Feb. 20

Gilgeous-Alexander was a first-time All-Star this season, but this coat makes him look like he’s been one a few times over. Plus, Salt Lake City in February, without a doubt, calls for a coat of these proportions.

Don’t let the coat take away from the black leather Chrome Heart pants. These are both focal points of the outfit in their own rights, making it easy for Gilgeous-Alexander to style with a white button-down shirt, a couple of chains and Timberland boots. His Louis Vuitton duffle briefcase, to add, symbolized that he was all business.
