EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: A-SHO Talks Recent Single Release "Feel Something"

It’s been two months since A-SHO released his single “Feel Something”, and it’s still something we’re loving. He went on to promote the song by releasing both a lyric video and an acoustic video on his YouTube Channel.

A-SHO is a singer-songwriter from Montreal, Canada. His real name is Adam Shomer, and even though he comes from a musical family and childhood; he didn’t plan on having a career in music. It was thanks to a beatboxing audition for an acapella group at his university, he realised this was what he wanted to do. At that time, he was at on a basketball scholarship in Boston.

Since then, he has been in the studio creating amazing music for us all to hear. He made his name and voice be heard when he featured on XYPO’s single “On My Way”; the track, of which, has over three million Spotify streams.

Now he’s signed with Sony Music Entertainment Canada, and has released this awesome track “Feel Something”. It’s an addicting song that we cannot stop playing, and we’re sure you won’t be able to get enough of as soon as you click play.

We had the amazing opportunity to exclusively interview A-SHO about this new song he’s recently released, titled “Feel Something”. He also chatted with us about being signed to Sony Music Entertainment Canada, what he hopes to achieve with his music, and what he has in store for us in 2018.

Hi A-SHO, we hope you are well. What have you been up to lately?

Hey hey! Doing great, thanks for the interview.

Recently moved to Toronto, Canada to pursue this music thing full time. Been in a lot of studio sessions recently trying to hone my sound and develop as a songwriter. Putting together some fresh new tunes for 2018.

Your most recent single is “Feel Something”, can you tell us more about the song?

“Feel Something” is a very special one for me. We live in a world where most of our time is spent behind a screen and human connection is becoming less important. So the song speaks to that concept while being packaged as a groovy dance bop.

What does the song mean to you?

Lyrically the song is a conversation between myself and someone who I’m trying to feel a human connection with. So it’s a very personal song. But we packaged it in a way that could be easily digested by the public and radios by using some of those trendy UK house influenced synths and grooves.

Where does your inspiration for music come from?

Vocally I’d say I’m inspired by soulful singers that also have a certain vulnerability to their tone like Miguel, Sam Smith, The Weeknd, etc…

Production wise, growing up in Montreal, Canada house music has definitely influenced me. And I gravitate towards those grooves and sounds in my music.

Lyrically I’d say human connection, in general, is what inspires me. The way we interact with each other, our fears, the games we play, how the mind works, love, lust, pain, loss all that good stuff.

You recently dropped a stripped-back acoustic version of the song on YouTube. What was that like to record?

It was cool. We kept it super organic and minimal. No fancy post-production stuff, just the raw vocal and guitar.

Why did you decide to record an acoustic version?

Just wanted to drive the point across that “Feel Something” is an actual song, not just a dance track!

It differs a lot from the upbeat original track. Can we expect this acoustic version to be officially released on downloading and streaming services? And will there be remixes of the song also released?

No plans to release the acoustic version so you’ll have to hit that repeat button on YouTube or come see me live one of these days.

Yes! There will absolutely be some remixes in the near future. Looking forward to seeing the different takes on the track that some of my producer friends will come up with.

There’s a lyric video out, but will there be an official music video? If so, can you reveal any exclusives about it?

I’d love to do a music video for the song. I have a lot of ideas and concepts for it. Nothing set it in stone for now but if the song grows and gains some traction internationally I’ll make it happen.

How did you get into music?

Music wasn’t always the plan A. But it became a serious passion of mine when I joined an acapella group in university. I got a taste of what it’s like to perform live and create music and it became an addiction. When I graduated I started writing my own songs and lending my vocals to dance producers. Had a few moderately successful releases and here we are today.

You’ve had quite the journey with your featured single “On My Way”, by XYPO, hitting three million Spotify streams. What is it like knowing that song has been heard that many times?

“On My Way” was definitely a cool story. UK based producer XYPO reached out and sent over the instrumental. I loved it and wrote the song that night. We released it the following week independently. We landed a couple blog features and a BBC Introduces feature and luckily enough Spotify Germany added it to some of their playlists and it’s been flying ever since. It just goes to show now, that if you’re making good music there are definitely avenues to get it out to the world no matter where you’re at in your career.

You’re now signed to Sony Music Entertainment Canada. What’s it like working with them?

I definitely feel very blessed to be part of the Sony family. Really high character people that are all super hardworking and genuine. It’s my first time having a whole team working my song so it’s really been a cool experience. Seeing the track hit top 40 at radio here in Canada has been very surreal and that’s a testament to Sony’s efforts.

With 2017 coming to an end, what can we expect from you in the next year?

Forward thinking music that pushes the dance envelope forward and tells stories that will make you feel something.

What are your five top songs to listen to right now?

What So Not – Be Ok Again

Lost Frequencies – Crazy

Shallou – You and Me

NoMBe – Wait (Kill Them With Color Remix)

Big Shaq – Mans Not Hot

What do you hope to achieve with your music?

Hope to provide people with an escape and a different perspective that can help them remember it’s ok to be yourself, to be vulnerable, and to be human… and to dance. Dancing is good.

And, finally, do you have a special message for your fans?

Don’t let your dreams be dreams, kids! If you’re lost don’t worry…you can follow me on my socials. Facebook, Twitter, and Insta.
